Grief, Loss & Bereavement

Grief, loss, and bereavement are closely related but distinct concepts:
Grief is the emotional response to the loss of a loved one or something important. It brings on intense feelings such as sadness, shock, numbness, anger, guilt, and longing for the person or thing that was lost. Grief is a natural and normal reaction to loss.
Loss refers to the actual event or situation that causes grief, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job, or loss of health. Any event that disrupts or challenges our sense of normalcy or ourselves can lead to feelings of loss.
Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after the death of a loved one or loss of something of intense personal value. It is the objective situation one faces after losing an important person or pet upon death but can also extend to other events as well. Bereavement often involves grieving the absence of the loved one privately and mourning the loss alongside others through public expressions of grief. In summary, grief is the emotional response, loss is the event that triggers grief, and bereavement is the period of grief and mourning following the death of a loved one. While these terms are related, they describe distinct aspects of the experience of loss and the process of coping with it.
